Turkish Airlines Joint Stock Company (THY) which has a monopoly position in airline services and which began its activities as a state enterprise in 1933 was converted into a Corporation with domestic and foreign capital in 1955. Since the beginning of 1990’s, after private airlines got the permit of offering transportation service, the company has lost its monopoly position. In parallel to the development of tourism sector, private airlines have been developing in the country. Their role in passenger transportation in line services in high season has already exceeded 30 %.

Totally 15 enterprises are authorized in order to carry out passenger and freight transportation through scheduled and unscheduled services in Turkish Civil Aviation Sector today. Totally 192 planes with big hulls, 11 of which are cargo planes in the fabric of these enterprises with a capacity of 34 thousand 126 seats and 470 thousand 500 kg offer services in civil aviation sector.

Moreover, there are totally 129 aerial vehicles in the fabric of 49 enterprises authorized to carry out air taxi business.

The Turkish Airlines Fleet is among the youngest fleet of the world with its average age of 6 years. As a result of modernization and development policies it has sustained, it realized flights to 103 points of the world, 76 of which are international and 27 of which are domestic, with a fleet composed of 79 planes in 2004. It is planned to realize nearly 20 international flights until 2010. The structure of the Turkish Airlines, its understanding of operation and entrepreneurship has arrived at an entirely modern structure. The Turkish Airlines carry passengers over 12 million and 134 thousand 700 tones cargo in a year.

The aim of the Turkish Airlines which is in the 40th range in terms of seize of plane fleet and in the first 20 fleets in terms of quality is developing its fleet and is continuously being renovated. New planes over 40 are planned to be included in the fleet till 2006 and in accordance with this aim, Toronto, Casablanca, Washington and North Africa are included in new international flights.

The number of aerodromes and airports operated by General Directorate of State Airports Authority is totally 34, 20 of which have an international status. Passenger transportation is carried out by shuttle buses as well as taxis and bulk transportation vehicles between airports and centrums.
